A rubber plant with marbled leaves. Most of each leaf is pale yellow-green, with dark green splashes and speckles on top. The stem and the midribs are red-brown.
Water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry. It copes with a missed watering better than with too much. Give it bright, indirect light: in a dim spot the pale parts turn greener and growth slows down. Keep it above 15 °C. It can drop leaves when it is moved, so pick one spot and leave it there.
Grows upright on a single stem at a steady pace. The leaves get bigger as the plant gets older. Indoors a rubber plant can reach 2 m or more over the years. Pinch out the tip if you want it to branch and stay bushier.
Native to the rainforests of northeast India and Southeast Asia. Toxic to cats and dogs: the milky sap irritates the mouth and skin. Ships in a 6 cm pot.
