A low Begonia with rounded, heart-shaped leaves covered in small raised bumps. The bumps are dark green, the veins between them lighter green, and the leaf edges and stems carry fine red hairs. Its name means "sun-changing": the leaf colour shifts with the light, lighter green in a bright spot and darker in shade.
Keep the soil lightly moist but never wet: water when the surface starts to feel dry. Bright, indirect light is best, but it copes with a dimmer spot. Keep it out of direct sun, which burns the leaves. It needs humid air. Dry room air browns the leaf edges, so a bathroom, a group of plants or a terrarium suits it. Keep it above 16 °C.
Grows steadily from a creeping rhizome into a low clump about 30 cm wide. In late winter it can flower, with small white to pale pink flowers on tall stems.
Native to the rainforests of Chiapas, in southern Mexico, where it grows on the shady forest floor. Toxic to cats and dogs. Ships in a 6 cm pot.
