An Alocasia with thick, glossy leaves in copper-red to dark bronze, with a metallic shine. The veins are sunken, so the leaf surface looks quilted. The undersides are dark purple. New leaves open greener and darken as they age.
Water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry. Too much water is the main risk: never leave it standing in water. Bright, indirect light, no direct midday sun. Keep it above 18 °C. It grows better in humid air.
Grows upright at a steady pace, with a new leaf every few weeks in spring and summer. Each new leaf is usually bigger than the last. In the cool, dark months it can slow down or drop a leaf, then regrow in spring. It stays fairly compact, about 40 cm when mature.
Native to the rainforests of Borneo. 'Red Secret' is a selected form of the wild species. Toxic to cats and dogs. Ships in a 6 cm pot.
