A young Monstera with plain green, spear-shaped leaves on long stalks. 'Burle Marx Flame' is grown for its adult leaves: long, and cut deeply into narrow lobes along both sides. Young plants like this one have solid leaves. The cuts appear as the plant matures and climbs.
Water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry. Bright, indirect light is best. It copes with a darker spot, but grows more slowly there and the leaves stay smaller. Keep it above 15 °C and add some humidity if the air is very dry.
Fast grower and a climber. Give it a moss pole to grow upwards. Without one, the stems lean and trail. On a pole it can pass 1.5 m indoors after a few years, and the leaves get larger and more deeply cut as it climbs.
Named after the garden of Roberto Burle Marx near Rio de Janeiro, where it was grown. Its exact wild origin is unknown. Toxic to cats and dogs if eaten. Ships in a 6 cm pot.
